Russia and Syrian Revolution

The Umayya Center for Research & Strategic Studies has published “Russia and the Syrian Revolution: Politics, Deception, and Military Aggression,” a book authored by journalist Ammar Yasser Hammou.

This book comes on the heels of Russia’s continued—and escalated—crimes against the Syrian people. While initially adopting a political position of opposition to the Syrian revolution, Russia’s antagonism has recently evolved and intensified. In addition to supporting the Assad regime through the supply of weapons, munitions, and military expertise, Russia has now taken to direct military intervention through airstrikes, under the pretext of eliminating the Islamic State. However, while Russia claims to be fighting terrorism in Syria, it is clear that hundreds of innocent civilians are the real victims, as the airstrikes leave behind a wake of destruction that includes schools, mosques, and popular markets.

In this book, the author illustrates that the history of Russian-Syrian relations extend far beyond the Syrian revolution, documenting decades of shared interests and Russia’s regional ambitions that have culminated intheir present day military aggression.

The author records the massacres that Russian warplanes have committed since the inception of Russia’s military operations on September 30, 2015 up until December 31, 2015.

The author also draws attention to Russia’s deceptive politics and media efforts. He notes that in Russia’s attempts to portray the Syrian rebels as inextricably linked to terrorist elements, Russia has shifted international opinion away from support of the Syrian revolution.

Concluding this book is a compilation of special testimonies acquired by the Umayya Center for Research & Strategic Studies, which highlight the falsity of Russia’s claims to be targeting the Islamic State, while the Free Syrian Army and innocent civilians are the real victims of these airstrikes.

This book holds particular significance, given that it is the first work to compile the history of Russian-Syrian relations as well as Russia’s involvement and criminal actions in the Syrian revolution. In documenting the dozens of massacres that Russia has committed, this book critically sheds light on the long-ignored threat that Russia poses to the Syrian people and their revolution.
